Valuation modelling masterclass

This course integrates with our regular financial modelling course. The first three days of both courses are the same and both programs have the same core components. In both courses delegates work together to build up an integrated financial statement model, observing good modelling practice, and making use of Excel’s most helpful functions.

The fourth and fifth days of this course includes coverage of investment appraisal and valuation, as per our valuation course.

This course is particularly suitable for someone who thinks they may have to use a model to value a company or decide whether an investment should go ahead.

Days one and two: building an integrated financial statement model

On the first two days of this course delegates work together to build up a model of integrated financial statements. Training delegates work together to create a model step by step from a blank Excel spreadsheet, under the careful supervision of the course tutor. This part of the course covers stage by stage model build up and the way accounting treatments can be reflected in a financial model. The course also includes coverage of Excel functions that are helpful in financial modelling.

Day three: moving on to advanced Excel modelling

On the third day course delegates tackle more advanced Excel modelling exercises using their newly-completed model to, for example, consider how you might incorporate a refinancing or a new deal. Course participants also consider how to model detailed debt structures, often critical in successfully raising finance for acquisitions.

Days four and five: valuation

The course also includes two days on investment appraisal DCF (discounted cash flow) and relative/ multiples based valuation methods. During this part of the programme course delegates use the model they have built to value their case study business imagining, perhaps, that the case business is an acquisition or investment target. Course delegates also practise applying valuation multiples to the case business.

The course is highly practical. Delegates spend a large portion of their time working in Excel, building a model for their case business and using that model in valuation. All through the program help and support is provided by the course tutor.

Combining financial model building with valuation makes this course particularly interesting to someone who thinks they may one day want to use a financial model in investment appraisal or to value a company.

The course covers Excel model build up and how a cash flow model should be integrated with valuation work.
